About Chikungunya & the Vaccine

What is Chikungunya?

Chikungunya is a viral illness transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, found mainly in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, and parts of the Americas. It causes high fever, severe joint pain, headache, rash, and muscle aches. While rarely fatal, symptoms can be debilitating and last for weeks or months — especially joint pain. Outbreaks are becoming more frequent in tropical and subtropical regions, and there is currently no specific treatment once infected.

Travel-Focused Vaccine Information

The Chikungunya vaccine (CHIKV VLP) was approved in 2023 for use in adults aged 18 and older. It’s recommended for travellers spending extended periods in high-risk areas or with conditions that could be worsened by viral arthritis. The course consists of two doses given 28 days apart and should be completed at least two weeks before travel for full protection. It’s particularly recommended for travellers visiting parts of South America, Southeast Asia, Africa, and the Caribbean.
