About Cholera & the Vaccine

What is Cholera?

Cholera is a bacterial infection of the small intestine, caused by Vibrio cholerae, commonly spread through contaminated food or water. It typically begins 2 hours to 5 days after exposure and can result in sudden, profuse 'rice-water' diarrhea, vomiting, and muscle cramps. Severe cases can quickly lead to extreme dehydration, electrolyte imbalances, shock, and even death if untreated.

Travel-Focused Vaccine Information

For travellers heading to regions where cholera is present, a protective oral vaccine is available. It's usually given as a single dose, but in some cases, a two-dose schedule may be recommended, spaced over 1 to 6 weeks. It's important to complete the course at least 10 days before travel to allow time for full protection.
