About Dengue Fever & the Vaccine
What is Dengue Fever?
Dengue is a viral infection transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, found in over 100 countries including parts of Asia, South America, Africa, and the Caribbean. It causes high fever, intense headaches, joint and muscle pain, skin rash, and nausea. In severe cases, it can lead to internal bleeding and dengue shock syndrome, which can be life-threatening. There is no specific antiviral treatment — only supportive care. With increasing global outbreaks, prevention is vital.
Travel-Focused Vaccine Information
The Dengue vaccine (Qdenga®) is recommended for adults and children aged 4 and over who are travelling to endemic areas, particularly those who have had a previous dengue infection or long-term exposure. It is given in two doses, three months apart. Ideally, start the course well in advance of travel. The vaccine is live-attenuated and offers protection against all four major dengue virus serotypes.
