What is Diphtheria, Tetanus & Polio?
Diphtheria, tetanus, and polio are serious infectious diseases. Diphtheria affects the throat and airways, leading to breathing difficulties, heart problems, and potentially death. Tetanus is caused by bacteria entering wounds, leading to muscle stiffness, painful spasms, and respiratory failure. Polio is a viral disease that can cause paralysis or even death. While rare in the UK due to immunisation, these diseases are still present in parts of Asia, Africa, and Eastern Europe.
Travel-Focused Vaccine Information
The DTP booster is recommended for travellers to countries where these infections remain a risk. A single dose is given to adults and adolescents who have previously completed their childhood vaccinations but require a top-up. Ideally, the booster should be given at least 2 weeks before travel. Protection lasts around 10 years. Some countries require proof of vaccination for entry or visa purposes.
