Japanese Encephalitis Vaccine
Protection against Japanese Encephalitis — essential for rural and long-stay travel in parts of Asia and the Western Pacific.
About Japanese Encephalitis & the Vaccine
What is Japanese Encephalitis?
Japanese Encephalitis (JE) is a rare but serious viral brain infection spread through mosquito bites, particularly in rural or agricultural regions of Asia and the Western Pacific. The virus is transmitted by Culex mosquitoes, especially during and after the rainy season. While many infected people have no symptoms, severe cases can result in brain swelling, seizures, coma, or death. There is no specific treatment — prevention via vaccination is key.
Travel-Focused Vaccine Information
The JE vaccine is recommended for travellers spending a month or more in endemic regions, especially if visiting rural areas. The standard vaccination course involves two doses of the vaccine, given 28 days apart. Accelerated schedules (7-day) may be possible for adults. It’s advisable to complete the course at least a week before travel. A booster may be required after 12–24 months if ongoing exposure is likely.
