About Rabies & the Vaccine

What is Rabies?

Rabies is a deadly viral infection that affects the central nervous system. It is most commonly transmitted through the bite or scratch of an infected animal. Once symptoms appear, rabies is almost always fatal. The disease is found in many parts of Asia, Africa, and South America, and exposure risk is higher for people spending time in rural areas or around animals.

Travel-Focused Vaccine Information

The rabies vaccine is recommended for travellers to high-risk areas, especially those spending time outdoors, working with animals, or visiting rural regions. A full pre-exposure course involves 3 doses over 21 or 28 days. A booster may be required after 1 year for continued protection. The vaccine dose not eliminate the need for medical attention after exposure but simplifies and improves post-exposure treatment.
