Protect yourself from a serious viral infection spread by tick bites in parts of Europe and Asia. Essential for hikers, campers, and rural travellers.
About Tick-borne Encephalitis & the Vaccine
What is Tick-borne Encephalitis?
Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is a viral infection that affects the brain and spinal cord. It’s transmitted through bites from infected ticks, typically found in forested or grassy areas of Europe and parts of Asia. In rare cases, it can also be contracted through unpasteurised dairy products. The illness can lead to long-term neurological complications or death.
Travel-Focused Vaccine Information
TBE vaccine is recommended for travellers spending time in rural or forested areas in countries where the virus is endemic. The standard course involves 2 doses 1–3 months apart, with a third dose 5–12 months later for long-term protection. A booster is advised every 3–5 years depending on risk. Vaccination should be completed at least 2 weeks before exposure.
