Typhoid Vaccine
Protection from typhoid fever, a serious bacterial infection spread through contaminated food and water. Essential for travellers to high-risk regions.
About Typhoid & the Vaccine
What is Typhoid?
Typhoid fever is a life-threatening infection caused by the bacterium *Salmonella typhi*. It's spread through consumption of contaminated food or water and is most common in parts of Asia, Africa, and Latin America. If left untreated, it can lead to serious complications such as intestinal perforation or even death.
Travel-Focused Vaccine Information
Two types of typhoid vaccine are available: a single-dose injectable (Vi polysaccharide) and an oral vaccine (Ty21a), taken over three days. The injectable offers protection for around 2–3 years, while the oral version protects for about 5 years. Vaccination should ideally be given at least 1–2 weeks before potential exposure.
